Listen closely. The story of Rooty Hill Masjid starts long before its physical structure even existed.
Rooty Hill Masjid began in 1987. A 3.2 acre plot was purchased. It stood at the corner of Woodstock and Duke Street. On the land was an old run-down house.
The house was transformed. Part of it became the Imam’s residence. The other part served as a prayer area. It also functioned as an Islamic center. Later an old shed on the property was converted into a Mosque.
In 1992 a new Mosque’s foundation was laid. This was a significant achievement. It was a source of pride for the community.
The next goal was education. The community wanted a school. Their children could receive a circular education. They wanted it in an Islamic environment. The culture and inherited beliefs could be maintained there.
This goal was realized in 1997. The primary school started with 33 students. These ranged from kindergarten to year 4. Initially, the school was named King Abdul Aziz Primary School. It was subsequently changed to Australian Islamic College Sydney.
Now the school has almost 1000 students. There are over 70 staff members. The Rooty Hill Masjid fostered this growth.
Rooty Hill Masjid offers many facilities. Wudu facilities are available to the right of the entrance. Women’s prayer facilities are upstairs. The entrance is on the right-hand side of the Masjid.
Jummah prayer is at 1.30pm. The Khutbah is in English and Urdu. It starts at 12:30. Jumah prayer starts at 1:30. This includes the two speeches in Arabic.
Rooty Hill Masjid also acknowledges Islam’s long-standing connection with Australia. The short film documentary is called “Before1770”. Abu Hanifa Institute created it. They documented the history of Muslims in Australia before 1770.
The film highlights critical locations. These are in the Northern Territory. They include Arnhem Land, Bawaka, and Groote Eylandt. The film shows the places and people who hosted the Macassan Muslims. Academics and Aboriginal elders from the Yolngu clan were also interviewed.
Rooty Hill Masjid also hosts events. These include Seeratun Nabi Jalsa. This explores the life of Prophet Muhammad. There are also fortnightly lecture series.
The Masjid observes important dates. These include the Importance of Muharram. They also commemorate the Martyrdom of Sayyiduna Hussain.
Rooty Hill Masjid. From humble beginnings it has become a place of worship. It has also grown to be an educational and cultural center. It enriches the lives of its community.
