In 1657, four free burghers received land south of Table Bay. Jan van Riebeeck named the location “Het Ronde Doornboschjen”. He named it after a cluster of thorn trees on the Liesbeek River. By 1670, records shortened this to Rondeboschje. Rondebosch wasn’t a distinct village until the 1830s.
The area of Rondebosch East is largely flat. It sits on the sandy Cape Flats less than 20 metres above sea level. Rondebosch East borders several areas. These include Athlone to the north and east. It also includes Crawford to the east. Lansdowne is to the south. Rondebosch is to the west.
The 2011 census provides insights into Rondebosch East. 52.7% of residents were female. 47.3% were male. 51.0% identified as “Coloured”. 18.5% as “Indian or Asian”. 12.3% as “Black African”. 9.4% as “White”. English was the first language for 84.4%. Afrikaans was spoken by 8.1%. Xhosa by 2.6%.
Kromboom Road is the main road through Rondebosch East. It connects to Rondebosch and Crawford. It also links to the M5 freeway. Crawford railway station is on the eastern edge of the suburb. It is part of the Cape Flats Line.
Rondebosch East Primary School sits centrally in the suburb. Windsor High School is just outside in Lansdowne.
