Eleven kilometers of wonder. That’s the Romika-Weg near Trier a circular hiking trail named after a former shoe factory. Imagine the history woven into its very path.

The Romika-Weg isn’t just a walk it’s a journey through time and nature. It’s a certified premium hiking trail part of the Traumschleifen network. This means it’s top quality well-marked and offers amazing views.

The trail starts near the Pluwig sports field. From there it meanders through diverse landscapes. First you’ll enjoy a gentle descent across a large meadow. Then you’ll pass along the idyllic Waschbach stream. Sunlight filters through the trees warming the path ahead. The trail winds up into a dense fir forest becoming narrower as you go. It passes through Gusterath eventually leading to orchards and then back into the woods.

The Romika-Weg is remarkably well-marked. You’ll see the distinctive signs of the Saar-Hunsrück-Steig Traumschleifen trails constantly. These clear signs make getting lost nearly impossible. The path descends steeply to the Gusterath barbecue hut.

Then follows another highlight the Waldbach stream. The clear rushing water cascades through a light forest a truly delightful section of the trail. The Waldbach flows into the Ruwer River. You follow the Ruwer until you reach the former Romika factory grounds. The factory gave the trail its name.

An informative display board tells the story of Romika’s importance to the region. After the factory a steep climb leads to a viewpoint. This viewpoint provides a fantastic panorama of the old factory site. You’ll continue through fields to the small village of Lonzenburg.

Next comes another extensive wooded area. You’ll walk alongside the Ruwer. You’ll also follow a small wild stream to the Karl-May site. Here for a long time the trail becomes less visible. However the trail markers remain helping you navigate.

Then you’ll reach a former quarry. This was transformed into an open-air theatre by the Karl-May-Freunde Pluwig. They hold Karl-May festivals there every two years. Information boards along the way detail the history of the theatre.

Finally the path follows the Waschbach for a final climb back to Pluwig. The Romika-Weg is truly special. It’s diverse interesting and enjoyable. It features forest paths meadows and a little asphalt. I especially loved the sections along the Waschbach and Waldbach. Their sparkling waterfalls are breathtaking.

The ascents are challenging. Good fitness helps but isn’t mandatory. You can take your time. The Romika-Weg combines nature with history. It’s a mittelschwer (moderate) hike rich in information and full of surprises.
