The Römermauer am Mühlenbach has endured. It has faced centuries of weathering. It’s suffered from insufficient foundations. Medieval and modern intrusions weakened its structure. The earth pressing against it posed a constant threat. A recent survey revealed that 62 meters were at risk of collapse. This necessitated urgent action.
Restoration is underway. The city council generously contributed 2.01 million euros. The Förderverein Römische Stadtmauer Köln e V is leading the project. They secured additional funding. The project involves strengthening the foundation. They will rebuild the original 2.4 meter thickness. A new facing of natural stone. Grauwacke hand-cut blocks will mirror the original construction. This will recreate the wall’s antique appearance.
