Overlooking the picturesque Ilm Valley stands the Roman House. It’s not a relic of ancient Rome, but a neoclassical gem nestled in Weimar’s Park on the Ilm. The Roman House whispers stories of a bygone era, a time when Duke Carl August sought solace and inspiration within its walls. Built between 1791 and 1798, the Roman House served as the Duke’s cherished retreat. Its design, inspired by the villas surrounding Rome, reflects Goethe’s vision of classical architecture. The renowned poet himself oversaw the construction of this “model house,” a testament to his deep appreciation of Roman aesthetics. The Roman House’s elevated position offers breathtaking views of the Ilm Valley. Imagine Duke Carl August gazing out upon this landscape, contemplating the beauty of nature and the power of art. Goethe, fresh from his Italian travels, brought the inspiration for the Roman House to Weimar. He collaborated with architect Johann August Arens to bring this vision to life. The house features a temple-like structure, supported by Doric columns and adorned with an Ionic portico. Inside, the Blue Salon hosted festive gatherings, while the Yellow Salon served as the Duke’s study. Today, the Roman House stands as a museum. Visitors can explore its elegant rooms and learn about the history of the Park on the Ilm. Although the original furniture is gone, the spirit of Classicism remains. A portrait of Duchess Anna Amalia by Angelika Kauffmann graces the Blue Salon. This portrait, once deemed a perfect fit for the room by Duke Carl August, adds a touch of historical authenticity to the Roman House. The Roman House remains a captivating landmark. It’s a fusion of Roman inspiration and German neoclassicism, a testament to the enduring power of art and nature.
