Did you know that Mozart’s Requiem was first performed here? Right before you stands the Röm Kath Kirche St Michael a church steeped in history. It’s one of Vienna’s oldest churches a testament to centuries of faith and artistic brilliance. Built between 1220 and 1240 its Romanesque foundations are still visible today. The church’s facade is also impressive. Completed in 1792 in the Neoclassical style it’s a beautiful example of Emperor Joseph II’s reign. Notice the sculptural group above the entrance. It features winged angels and St Michael slaying Lucifer. This was created by the Italian sculptor Lorenzo Mattielli. He also sculpted the Hercules figures at the Hofburg entrance directly opposite.
Don’t forget the crypt. The Michaelergruft is famous. Aristocrats accessed their family crypts through marble slabs in the church floor. Due to the unique climate hundreds of mummified corpses remain remarkably well-preserved. Some still wear burial finery or wigs. Others are adorned with flowers skulls or Baroque paintings. Among them lies Pietro Metastasio a celebrated opera librettist.
