It is the 25th country park in Hong Kong. Established in 2024 it sprawls across 530 hectares in the northeastern New Territories. Its remoteness near the border has preserved its natural beauty.
Robin’s Nest is a treasure trove of biodiversity. Various species of conservation interest thrive here. The abandoned Lin Ma Hang Lead Mine is a Site of Special Scientific Interest. It houses one of Hong Kong’s most significant bat colonies. This mine isn’t just a cave though. It’s a part of Hong Kong’s extensive mining history dating back to the 1860s. At its peak in the 1930s around 500 workers toiled in its tunnels and shafts. Imagine the echoes of their labor still resonating in the depths.
But Robin’s Nest is more than just nature. Its history is etched into the landscape. The MacIntosh Forts stand as silent sentinels. These seven observation posts built between 1949 and 1953 guarded the Shenzhen River. Two remain in Robin’s Nest designated as Grade II historic buildings in 2009. Their story is a testament to Hong Kong’s border defenses. Nearby Shan Tsui holds remnants of World War II pillboxes and trenches built by the Japanese. These relics whisper stories of occupation and resistance.
The Lin Ma Hang Country Trail takes you past the village a Hakka settlement over 300 years old. Villagers once lived in harmony with Robin’s Nest working the land. The trail itself winds through lush hills Feng Shui woodlands and old rice terraces. It culminates at a unique green structure one of the MacIntosh Forts. From here the views of mountains and sea are breathtaking.
The park offers two trails the Robin’s Nest Country Trail and the Lin Ma Hang Country Trail. Both are well marked with information boards viewing points and interpretation panels to help you appreciate the scenery and cultural heritage. Plan a visit that takes at least four to five hours to explore the area fully. Allow time for hiking between transportation hubs.
