On a warm afternoon in June 1985, a young Navy diver named Robert Stethem boarded TWA Flight 847. Little did he know this ordinary flight would end in tragedy. He was coming home from an assignment in Greece. The Robert Stethem Memorial Complex stands as a testament to his courage and sacrifice. Robert Stethem grew up in Waldorf, Maryland, a suburb of Washington, D.C. This complex, with its athletic fields and stone monument, honors his memory. Stethem’s flight was hijacked by Hezbollah terrorists. They held 39 people hostage, including Stethem. The terrorists’ demands included the release of hundreds of Lebanese and Palestinians held by Israel. Stethem was singled out and brutally beaten and tortured because he was an American serviceman. He was tragically shot and his body was thrown onto the tarmac at Beirut International Airport. This horrific act shocked the world. The Robert Stethem Memorial Complex serves as a place for reflection and remembrance. It’s a reminder of the devastating consequences of terrorism. One of the hijackers was eventually caught and convicted of Stethem’s murder. He was sentenced to life in prison. However, he was released after serving only 19 years. Other hijackers remain at large or have met their own violent ends. The Robert Stethem Memorial Complex is more than just a sports complex. It is a symbol of a life tragically cut short. It stands as a reminder of the ongoing fight against terrorism and the importance of remembering the victims.
