Hidden within the landscape, the hillfort of Řivnáč whispers secrets of a time long past. Here, on this very spot, the echoes of the Řivnáč culture still linger. They lived here over 6,000 years ago. Řivnáč wasn’t just a settlement. It was a strategically placed fortification, perched high above a bend in the Vltava River. Imagine the view from this vantage point. These early inhabitants, part of the Eneolithic period, could survey the landscape, watching over a vital north-south trade route along the river. The discovery of this site in the 19th century, by physician and amateur archaeologist Čeněk Rýzner, unveiled a trove of Stone Age pottery and tools unlike anything seen before. Řivnáč gave its name to this unique culture, a culture that dominated central Bohemia for almost 400 years, starting around 3200 BC. They were known for their fortified hilltop settlements, Řivnáč being a prime example. These sites weren’t just defensive. They also served ritualistic purposes and became symbols of power, especially given their prominent locations. The Řivnáč culture thrived here, building their lives and shaping their world. But around 2800 BC, they vanished. Their disappearance remains a mystery, a puzzle that archaeologists continue to debate. What happened to these people? What forces drove them from their hilltop stronghold of Řivnáč? The answers, like the whispers of the wind through the trees, remain elusive. Yet, standing here, on the very ground they once occupied, we can almost feel their presence, a connection to a distant past.
