On August 3 1966 a momentous meeting took place. Representatives from several Baptist churches gathered. They discussed a vital need a Baptist church in the Ritchie-North Hampton area. This meeting marked the genesis of Ritchie Baptist Church. Rev Richard J Sweetman presided. Rev William E Nash was chosen as the first pastor. Mr James Cunningham was selected as his associate.
The Ritchie Baptist Church wasn’t built overnight. The first prayer meeting was humble. It was held in Donald McDaniel’s home in October 1966. The very first Sunday School and worship service followed. Eighteen members attended. Their offering totaled $60 a testament to their faith and dedication. This marked the birth of the Ritchie Baptist Chapel.
The church’s journey involved several pivotal figures. Mr Cunningham became pastor when Rev Nash’s health declined. In February 1967 the chapel purchased its current location. Construction rapidly progressed. The new building opened in April of the same year. Rev Cunningham’s resignation in 1969 led to Rev Joseph Stover’s interim role. Rev Julian R Mills became the pastor in 1970. Under his leadership the congregation grew to 207 members. The Ritchie Baptist Chapel officially became Ritchie Baptist Church on October 31 1971 realizing the founders’ vision.
The church’s physical form also changed. A dining area was added in 1971. A steeple a generous gift from J Walter Thompson Advertising Agency of New York was installed in 1974. A vestibule was constructed in 1975. The pews you see today were added around this time. The church experienced further renovations under Rev Jasper Chamberlain’s pastorate from 1991 to 2003. New additions included restrooms speakers a water fountain and a church van. He ordained several deacons demonstrating the church’s spiritual growth. Rev Sidney Samuel served as interim then pastor until 2010. Rev Sterling Swann led the church from 2012 to 2020. His focus was evangelism Christian education and youth ministry. He oversaw significant improvements including a new bus and partnerships with organizations like the SHARE Food Network. Finally Rev Edward Capers Jr became the current pastor.
