Consider this a journey back to the early days of Rio Grande da Serra. It is a time when this river, the Rio Grande, was not just a geographical feature. It was the lifeblood of a growing community.

The Rio Grande is more than just a river. It’s a landmark that has shaped the history and identity of this municipality in São Paulo. Rio Grande da Serra translates to Great River of the Mountain Chain. The river’s significance is embedded in the very name of the city.

Imagine the year 1560. Land is being allotted in Jeribatiba. This is the third village developed by the Jesuits. Salt is a precious commodity. It must be transported from the port of São Vicente to the Alto da Serra highlands. The path leads through the village that would become Paranapiacaba. The Rio Grande is a crucial part of this route.

In 1640, a significant event occurs. The Marquês de Alegretti officially renames Jeribatiba to Rio Grande. Donkeys are the primary mode of transport. Mogi das Cruzes, founded in the same year, quickly becomes the largest settlement. The Rio Grande facilitates the transport of goods. It becomes an essential artery for commerce.

The salt is transported along the Caminho do Mar or sea road. It goes to Alto da Serra, also known as Zanzaláh. A Jesuit, who died on this arduous route, was buried. A wooden cross marked his grave. In 1611, this cross was replaced by a chapel. Today, it is known as the Capela de São Sebastião.

Fast forward to 1867. The São Paulo Railway reaches Rio Grande. This is a turning point. Coffee beans and timber can now be transported to São Paulo. The development of Rio Grande booms. However, the railway also brings an influx of expatriates. They come mostly from England. They establish a new town at Paranapiacaba.

From 1880, coal mining begins. By 1895, manganese and graphite extraction are also underway. Mineral water becomes another valuable resource. From 1899, immigrants from Italy, Germany, and Switzerland arrive. They come to work in Rio Grande. The Rio Grande is central to this growth.

In 1906, work begins on canalizing the Rio Grande river. The river’s importance continues to grow. By 1927, São Paulo municipality acquires Pedreira. It is a suburb of Rio Grande. New factories bring employment opportunities. An electric power station is built in 1928.

Between 1930 and 1954, small-scale industries flourish. Housing facilities, marketing centers, and factories are established. Schools, sports centers, musical events, carnivals, and religious festivals emerge.

In 1964, Rio Grande da Serra is officially recognized as a municipality. The Rio Grande has been a silent witness to all these transformations. It has shaped the economy and community.

Today, the Rio Grande arm of the Billings Reservoir and Dam is a significant geographical feature. It covers 127 square kilometers. The reservoir supplies water to about 1.8 million people. It is used for fishing and swimming. The Rio Grande continues to be a vital resource for the region.

As we stand here, remember that the Rio Grande is more than just water flowing through a channel. It is a symbol of resilience, growth, and the enduring spirit of Rio Grande da Serra. It’s a river that tells a story. It is a story of a community that has thrived alongside its waters for centuries.
