Gazing at the Rio Embu Mirim, it’s hard to imagine the life it once nurtured. The Rio Embu Mirim flows through the western part of São Paulo’s Metropolitan Region. Its journey begins in the municipality of Embu das Artes. The river meanders towards the municipalities of Itapecerica da Serra and São Paulo. Finally, it concludes its journey, flowing into the Guarapiranga reservoir. Originally, this waterway was known as the M’Boi Mirim River. Over time, the name evolved into the Rio Embu Mirim. This river played a significant role in naming the M’Boi Mirim region in São Paulo. The Rio Embu Mirim gracefully flows through the historic center of Embu das Artes. It even crosses a section of the Rodoanel Sul, near the Régis Bittencourt Highway. During the Rodoanel project, new preservation areas were created along the river’s floodplains. These areas, close to the highway, serve as environmental compensation. Sadly, near its mouth, the river faces significant pollution challenges. Untreated sewage from irregular settlements in Itapecerica and São Paulo flows directly into its waters. The Rio Embu Mirim holds an important distinction. It is the second largest tributary of the Guarapiranga reservoir. It contributes approximately 34% of the reservoir’s volume, second only to the Embu-Guaçu River. The name “Embu-Mirim” comes from the ancient Tupi language. It translates to “small snake,” a fitting description for this winding waterway. Despite its polluted state near the mouth, expeditions have discovered a pristine source. Near the Morro Grande Reserve, a hidden grotto reveals a spring of pure, clear water. This untouched oasis offers hope and a reminder of the Rio Embu Mirim’s potential.
