Step back in time. Picture Rimpar as it was in 1347. The von Grumbach family a powerful noble lineage commissioned the construction of Rimpar Castle. This imposing structure one of Germany’s oldest moated castles stands as a testament to their influence. Its sturdy walls have witnessed centuries of history. Rimpar’s history stretches back further though. Documents mention Rimpar as early as 1126. The name itself Rintburi in Old High German translates to “place by the cattle shed”. This hints at Rimpar’s early agricultural roots. Its location in the Pleichach valley alongside the Main-Werra cycle path reflects its peaceful setting for centuries.
But Rimpar wasn’t always peaceful. During the Peasants’ War the castle was ravaged. The church was destroyed by fire. Rimpar’s connection to Wilhelm von Grumbach a knight and adventurer born here in 1503 entangled it in the conflicts surrounding the Bishopric of Würzburg. After Wilhelm’s death his son Konrad fell under the sway of the Bishopric. In 1593 he was forced to sell the castle and village to Prince-Bishop Julius Echter of Würzburg. Echter oversaw a period of significant building activity. The castle was expanded into a hunting lodge. The parish church was renovated.
Rimpar also boasts a rich cultural heritage. The former abbey church in nearby Maidbronn houses a remarkable sandstone altarpiece. The Lamentation of Christ is Tilman Riemenschneider’s last masterpiece. It’s an awe-inspiring testament to the artistic skills of this legendary sculptor. It remains a highlight of any visit to Rimpar and Maidbronn. The region even produced notable figures like Henry Lehman co-founder of the famous Lehman Brothers investment bank. He was born in Rimpar around 1821 before emigrating to the United States.
Rimpar’s legacy extends beyond its castles and art. The Gramschatzer Wald a nearby forest offers hiking and recreational activities. Local businesses such as bakeries butchers and restaurants cater to the needs of its roughly 8000 inhabitants. It is a place of vibrant community life.
