From atop Rileys Mountain Lookout, the world unfolds. The Blue Mountains National Park stretches south for over 20 kilometers. Even further west, the landscape extends, a tapestry of nature’s artistry. Rileys Mountain Lookout isn’t just a viewpoint. It’s the highest point in the area, offering unparalleled views of the Nepean Gorge and the winding Nepean River below.

Rileys Mountain Lookout sits on the edge of Rileys Mountain. It’s a place where the vastness of the Australian landscape truly captivates. The lookout is accessible via the Rileys Mountain Track, a 5-kilometer roundtrip bushwalk. This track begins at the end of Fairlight Road, a short drive from Penrith. The track is a shared path for hikers, mountain bikers, and horse riders. So be prepared to encounter fellow adventurers along the way.

The lookout itself is a large, unfenced rock platform. Be mindful of the steep drop, especially if visiting with children. The views are similar to those from nearby lookouts like The Rock Lookout and Nepean Narrows Lookout. However, from Rileys Mountain Lookout, the panorama is even more expansive. The lookout provides a unique vantage point to appreciate the vastness of the Blue Mountains National Park. You can even glimpse Euroka Clearing, especially ethereal in the early morning fog.

Rileys Mountain, where the lookout stands, bears the name of James John Riley. He held the distinction of being Penrith’s first mayor, elected in 1871 when Penrith was proclaimed a municipality. The mountain itself stands at 243 meters and boasts a trig station, known as Mulgoa Trig, hidden amongst the scrub. A communications tower also marks the summit, a modern addition to this historic landscape. The lookout is situated just before the mountain’s peak, offering breathtaking views as a reward for your hike. Remember to take care near the bottom of the descent where the trail takes a sharp left turn. The final kilometer becomes steep, loose, and eroded.

From Rileys Mountain Lookout, you can appreciate the natural beauty of the area. It offers a glimpse into the history of the region and the individuals who shaped it. So, take a deep breath of fresh air, soak in the panoramic views, and let the tranquility of this unique vantage point wash over you.
