Named after Roger Rigby, son of dedicated bushwalker Alan Rigby, this Rigby Rock Lookout offers more than just a view. It gives us a connection to a legacy of conservation. Let’s take a moment to appreciate the sweeping vista before us. The Grose Valley unfolds in its majestic splendor.
Rigby Rock Lookout stands on Rigby Hill. It’s a high point atop a sandstone escarpment. From here, the views extend across the Grose Wilderness and the Grose River. This river is a declared Wild River.
The walk to Rigby Rock Lookout is short. It is only 1.2 km return. The walk from Pierces Pass picnic area is easy. It can be accessed from Bells Line of Road.
Looking east, can you spot Mount Banks and Du Faur Head? To the west, see Birrabang Walls and Burra Korain Head. Almost directly across the Grose Valley to the southwest, you can see Blackheath Walls. Hanging Rock and Baltzer lookouts jut sharply out into the valley there. Below us to the southeast, you might see people at Walls Lookout.
Remember, the cliffs here are over 200m high. There are no fences. Be careful, especially when taking photos. Keep children close.
The Rigby Hill walking track starts at the Pierces Pass carpark. The unsealed road is suitable for all vehicles. The signposted track starts at the far end of the carpark. It is initially fairly level.
About halfway along the track, Rigby Hill appears in front of you. The track winds up to the top. The walk is slightly shorter than Walls Lookout. The elevation gain is fairly similar. But this walk feels like there’s more of an ascent. You do all of the climbing at the very end to reach the top of the small peak.
The path can be a bit challenging in some sections. Good hiking shoes are recommended. This area is still a bit undiscovered. You won’t find too many tourists.
When you’re on top of Rigby Hill, be mindful of the cliff edges. There isn’t any fencing around them. Be cautious while exploring the area. Walk closer to the cliff edges facing the valley carefully.
Many Blue Mountains landmarks can be seen from this spot. Hanging Rock is easy to identify. On a clear day with binoculars, you might see Mount Banks, Perrys Lookdown, and Anvil Rock Lookout. You can also see and hear the Grose River flowing in the valley.
After enjoying Rigby Rock Lookout, consider visiting Walls Lookout. The trailhead is at the parking area at the start of Pierces Pass Road. Another great nearby hike is the Mount Banks Summit Walk. It is a 2.5 km return trail to the summit.
