Have you ever wondered where a suburb gets its name? The story of Richwood in Cape Town is quite interesting. Let’s take a closer look at this outer northern suburb.

Richwood is a relatively young suburb. It is located about 15 kilometers northeast of Cape Town. This puts it alongside the N7 freeway.

Its name is a blend of two other names. These are Richmond Park and Goodwood. This combining of names is known as a portmanteau.

In 2011, Richwood had almost 3000 residents. These residents lived in just over 950 households. The suburb has grown significantly since then.

Richwood covers a small area. It measures less than one square kilometer. Despite its size, it has a high population density.

The suburb sits at an elevation of 40 meters. Most residents in Richwood speak English. Afrikaans is also common. Xhosa is spoken by a smaller percentage of the population.

Richwood is conveniently located. It lies between the N7 highway and the M13. The M13 is also known as Tygerberg Valley Road. This road connects Richwood to Durbanville and Bothasig.

The M13 also provides access to the N7 highway. From there, you can easily reach Cape Town and Malmesbury. This access is via the M14 and M12.

Burgundy Estate is a large residential area within Richwood. It features many apartment complexes. Balwin Properties, a JSE listed company, developed two large estates here.

These residential areas are popular. Their central location is key. They offer easy access to various parts of Cape Town. Richwood’s location and growing residential options make it a noteworthy suburb.

Richwood’s story is a simple one. It’s a tale of growth and convenient location. The blend of names reflects its modern development. As Richwood continues to expand, it will be interesting to see how it evolves. This suburb is a microcosm of Cape Town’s dynamic growth.
