Have you ever pondered the echoes of history resonating within the walls of a church? Here at Richmond Anglican, also known as St. Peter’s Anglican Church, those echoes whisper tales of governors, convicts, and the very foundations of Richmond itself. Richmond Anglican stands as a testament to the vision of Governor Lachlan Macquarie. In 1810, he envisioned a town centered around a church, a schoolhouse, and a burial ground. This very spot, overlooking the Hawkesbury River flats, was chosen for St. Peter’s. Construction began in 1836, with Francis Clarke’s design taking shape in the Old Colonial Georgian style. James Atkinson, who also built St. Bartholomew’s and St. Thomas’, brought the church to life. Bishop William Broughton consecrated Richmond Anglican in 1841, marking a pivotal moment for the growing community. The church’s design is a departure from the typical Gothic style, reflecting the unique vision of its architect. The original structure, three bays long with a tower and spire, exudes a sense of timeless elegance. In 1850, Edmund Blacket, a renowned Australian architect, added a porch to the northern side. Later, a chancel was added, altering the interior layout and creating the space we see today. The cemetery at Richmond Anglican predates the church itself. The first burial, that of George Rouse, took place in 1809. Here lie the remains of early Hawkesbury settlers, their stories etched in stone. Among them are prominent figures like John Bowman, Thomas Matcham Pitt, and Lt. Thomas Hobby, a supporter of Macquarie himself. The cemetery offers a poignant glimpse into the lives of those who shaped this region. The rectory, completed in 1847, is said to be a replica of an English rectory familiar to Bishop Broughton. This charming building, with its Victorian Rustic Gothic style, complements the church beautifully. The Sunday school hall, a simple yet elegant structure, and the coach house and stables further enrich the historical tapestry of this remarkable site. Today, Richmond Anglican remains a vibrant hub for the community. It’s a place where history and faith intertwine, inviting us to reflect on the past while embracing the present. As you stand here, imagine the generations who have walked these grounds, their lives interwoven with the story of Richmond Anglican.
