Opened in December 2004 it’s more than just a shopping centre. It’s a testament to urban renewal. It was built on the site of a former Berger Paints factory. This factory operated from 1916 until 1986. Imagine the paint fumes the workers breathed. The site even underwent remediation before construction began.
Rhodes Waterside is part of a larger $1.2 billion development. This included residential blocks and an office building. The Walker Corporation originally developed the centre. They also developed Broadway Shopping Centre. Mirvac acquired Rhodes Waterside in 2007 and still owns it today.
The centre has seen significant changes in its major tenants. Initially it housed IKEA Coles Bi-Lo and Reading Cinemas. Bi-Lo was later replaced by Target. Target then made way for Kmart in 2021. This showcases the ever-changing nature of retail.
Today Rhodes Waterside boasts an impressive 34646 square meters of floor space. It features many popular stores. These include Aldi Bing Lee and of course Kmart. There are also restaurants and a cinema. The centre provides convenient access to public transport. It’s a short walk from Rhodes train station. It also has excellent bus connections. There are even 2414 parking spaces.
Though a ferry wharf on the Parramatta River has been proposed for years it remains in the planning stages. A future expansion perhaps?
