“A palace fit for scholars?” you might ask, gazing at Rettigska huset. Yes, this grand building, with its classical style and stately presence, is more than just a beautiful facade on Villagatan. Rettigska huset has a fascinating history, intertwined with prominent names and a legacy of knowledge. Built in 1878, it was originally owned by Anna Hierta-Retzius, a champion of women’s rights and daughter of newspaper magnate Lars Johan Hierta. Imagine the lively discussions and progressive ideas that filled these rooms! Later, it passed into the hands of Hjalmar Rettig, a high-ranking civil servant, and then to his son, the historian Herbert Rettig. Herbert, with his wife Ing-Marie, made a decision that would forever shape the fate of Rettigska huset. They bequeathed this magnificent building, along with Skånelaholm Castle and a generous sum of money, to the Royal Swedish Academy of Letters, History, and Antiquities. Since 1973, Rettigska huset has served as the Academy’s home, a place where knowledge is cherished and celebrated. Though you might not see them today, the spirit of scholars past and present permeates every corner of this grand old house, a testament to the enduring power of history and intellect.
