The Restare, a white platform of polished concrete, is a tribute to Sweden’s brave veterans. It sits majestically here on the Gärdet peninsula, surrounded by stunning parkland, a silent testament to those who have served their country. The platform, bearing the Latin word “restare” meaning to stay, to rest, to remain, stretches out before you, its surface marked with elegant inlaid steel bands that form a mesmerising mandala pattern. Standing in the centre of the platform is a pure white marble sculpture, rising two metres high in the shape of a bud. It’s a symbol of hope, future, and regeneration, a reminder of the lives bravely given and bravely lived. The Restare was inaugurated in 2013 by King Carl XVI Gustaf, bringing it to life as a place for reflection and remembrance. It is designated as the location for Stockholm’s annual Veteran’s Day celebrations, honouring those who have served in both national and international conflicts. This monument serves as a symbol of the nation’s gratitude to its veterans, a space for personal reflection, and a permanent reminder of their sacrifices. The Restare is a powerful place, where history and hope intertwine. As you stand here, surrounded by the gentle sounds of nature, you can feel the profound weight of the sacrifices made by those who have served. But you can also feel a sense of hope and renewal, the promise of a future built on their courageous actions.
