Dreaming of a royal encounter? We stand before the Residence of Prince Akishino. It is located within Tokyo’s Akasaka Estate. This is no ordinary home. It is a place of history, family and imperial life.

The Residence of Prince Akishino has a rich history. It was once the home of Prince and Princess Chichibu. Prince Akishino has resided here since March 1997. The residence underwent redesign before he moved in.

The Akasaka Estate itself is a park-like setting. It houses several imperial residences. The Emperor Emeritus also has an official residence here. The estate is not open to the public. However, we can appreciate its significance from here.

The Akasaka Estate has six main access gates. These gates provide entry to this exclusive world. Political figures and diplomatic representatives visit here. Celebrities are also invited to garden parties. These exclusive events highlight the estate’s importance.

Once, the estate belonged to the powerful Tokugawa clan. In 1632, they were granted this land. It became one of the largest daimyo residences in the city. The Emperor even lived here for 15 years after a fire destroyed Nishinomaru Palace.

The Residence of Prince Akishino is more than just a building. It is a complex of former imperial residences. These buildings have been renovated over the years. The Chichibu Residence was built in 1972. A housing for dry nurses was added in 1931. Further expansion occurred in 2000. This was to accommodate the growing family.

From 2019 to 2022 the complex underwent refurbishment. During this time, the family lived nearby. Their temporary palace was called Gokagusho. Crown Prince Akishino, his wife Kiko and their children live here. Princess Kako and Prince Hisahito also reside at the Residence of Prince Akishino.

In 2022, renovations were unveiled to the media. The residence expanded to 2972 square meters. The cost of renovations was about ¥3 billion. The updates included nonflammable materials and LED lighting. Chandeliers and marble shelves add to the elegance. These original fixtures date back to 1972.

The Residence of Prince Akishino stands as a symbol. It represents imperial history and family life. Although we cannot enter, we can imagine the stories within its walls. It remains a vital part of Tokyo’s Akasaka Estate. A place where tradition and modernity meet.
