Established in 1985, the Research Institute of Molecular Pathology (IMP) stands as a testament to scientific curiosity. The IMP, nestled within the Vienna Biocenter, pulsates with the energy of over 200 scientists from 40 different countries. Their shared language, the language of discovery, is English. This international hub of molecular life sciences is a joint venture, funded by the pharmaceutical giant Boehringer Ingelheim and various research grants. The Research Institute of Molecular Pathology isn’t just a building; it’s a living organism of 15 independent research groups. They delve into the intricate world of molecular and cellular biology, unraveling the secrets of genes and chromosomes. They explore the building blocks of life, from stem cells and development to the complex dance between immunology and cancer. The IMP’s impact resonates far beyond its walls. Between 1985 and 2021, over 2,200 research papers emerged from its labs, contributing significantly to the global scientific community. Their work has led to 93 patents, a testament to the practical applications of their fundamental research. The Research Institute of Molecular Pathology has also been recognized with prestigious awards. Numerous ERC Grants have been awarded to IMP faculty. Five faculty members have received the esteemed Wittgenstein Award, a testament to Austria’s high regard for scientific achievement. The IMP’s very own Kim Nasmyth was honored with the Breakthrough Prize in Life Sciences in 2017 for his groundbreaking work on cohesin. Just a year later, his former PhD student, Angelika Amon, received the same accolade. The IMP is housed in a state-of-the-art facility, opened in 2017. The building itself is a nod to the research within, with its facade mimicking DNA bands and dichroic films in the elevator, reminiscent of microscopy filters. This architectural marvel, funded by Boehringer Ingelheim, serves as a fitting home for the groundbreaking discoveries made within.
