A challenging tramp awaits you. That’s Renata Ridge. Renata Ridge is a long bush-clad ridge in the Tararua Forest Park. It stretches from the tussock tops of the Southern Crossing to the Akatarawa Road. Imagine a keen tramper walking the tops of the Southern Crossing in a loop trip returning to Otaki Forks. This is the adventure Renata Ridge offers.

The journey begins with a climb to Field Hut. It’s a moderately strenuous hike. Some prefer to reach Field Hut on Friday night. This allows a more relaxed Saturday. If you’re feeling energetic you can begin your journey on Saturday morning. The route is not overly difficult. However it is a relief to escape the bush beyond Tirotiro Knob. You’ll then see the historic cream-colored Field Hut. This hut is only halfway to Kime Hut but it feels further.

Beyond Kime Hut lies another climb. Mt Hector is at the summit. From there the Southern Crossing curves around in a feature called the ‘Dress Circle’. You traverse the Beehives and Atkinson to reach a signpost for Renata Ridge. A steep descent into a bush saddle awaits. This sets you up for the final climb to Mt Elder.

Atop Mt Elder sits the four-bunk Elder Hut. It boasts stunning views of Wellington Harbour. The deck is perfect for dinner if the weather is favourable. The route continues along Renata Ridge. It passes the decrepit Renata Hut before reaching an old logging road. Follow this road down to Waiotauru Hut. This is an old tractor shed.

From Waiotauru Hut you cross a swingbridge. The track then heads down the left of the Waiotauru River. If the river flow is normal walking down the riverbed is a pleasant way to descend. Once you reach the roadend a short walk takes you back to the car park at Otaki Forks. Renata Ridge truly is a rewarding experience. It offers a blend of challenge and breathtaking scenery. Remember Renata Ridge when planning your next adventure in the Tararua Forest Park.
