Welcome to Reindorf a district nestled within Vienna’s 15th district Rudolfsheim-Fünfhaus. Reindorf’s name first surfaced in 1411. Back then Rhein referred to fertile fields and vineyards nestled in the valleys. These weren’t just any fields mind you. They thrived in the gentle slopes the perfect terroir for cultivating grapes.
But Reindorf’s early existence wasn’t without its trials. Flooding from the Wien River or perhaps enemy attacks wiped out the medieval settlement. It wasn’t until the 18th century that Reindorf saw a significant resurgence in population. This was a time of rebuilding after the second Turkish siege of Vienna in 1683. By 1770 Reindorf had 52 houses. By 1801 this number had grown to 101. The resilient spirit of Reindorf is evident in this remarkable recovery.
In 1863 Reindorf joined forces with Braunhirschen and Rustendorf to form the municipality of Rudolfsheim. Reindorf may have lost its independent status but its identity certainly endured. Its unique history is reflected in the defined building conservation zone of Braunhirsch-Reindorf. This zone protects several buildings along the Äußere Mariahilfer Straße and Reindorfgasse particularly around the parish church of Reindorf.
Even today Reindorf remains a vibrant part of Vienna’s tapestry. It continues to exist as a parish district for the Roman Catholic Church. However this parish’s jurisdiction stretches well beyond Reindorf’s traditional borders. In 2016 it absorbed parts of Fünfhaus expanding its reach significantly.
