From an abandoned Israeli Air Force base to Israel’s sole private university. Reichman University has a story to tell. Right here in Herzliya, just a short distance from the vibrant city of Tel Aviv, stands Reichman University. This institution, formerly known as the Interdisciplinary Center Herzliya (IDC Herzliya), has a fascinating history. Reichman University was founded in 1994 by Uriel Reichman. Originally envisioned as a private college, it achieved university status in a landmark decision in 2021. This transition marked a significant moment in Israeli education. Reichman University became the first private university in the country. Interestingly, Reichman University receives no direct funding from the government. This independence allows for a unique approach to education and research. The campus itself sits on land with its own story. This very spot was once home to the first squadron of the Israeli Air Force. This squadron operated here for three months during the War of Independence. Today, the echoes of history blend with the dynamism of a modern university. Reichman University houses diverse schools. These include the Lauder School of Government, Diplomacy and Strategy, the Arison School of Business, and the Efi Arazi School of Computer Science. They also have the Sammy Ofer School of Communications, the Baruch Ivcher School of Psychology. Additionally, Reichman University established other schools. Among these additions were the Tiomkin School of Economics, the Harry Radzyner Law School, and the School of Sustainability. The School of Sustainability, in particular, sparked debate in 2012. This controversy stemmed from the school’s funding sources, which included some of Israel’s major polluting companies. Reichman University also sponsors NoCamels. NoCamels is an online platform dedicated to showcasing Israeli innovation in technology and science. Reichman University has a notable alumni network, too. It includes actress Gal Gadot, known for her role as Wonder Woman, and Yair Netanyahu, a prominent podcaster. From its humble beginnings on a former air force base, Reichman University has become a beacon of private higher education in Israel.
