Can you imagine a bustling dairy farm in the heart of Arlington? Here at Reevesland, it wasn’t just a dream, it was a reality. Reevesland, also known as Reeves Farmhouse or Torreyson Farm, stands as a testament to Arlington’s agricultural past. This two-story building with its stone foundation and cross gables whispers tales of a time when cows grazed and milk cans clinked, not so long ago. The original Torreyson Farm was purchased in 1863 by William H. Torreyson. He built the tenant farmhouse around 1865. It was his daughter Lucy and her husband George Reeves who made this place their home in 1898, eventually giving the farm its enduring name, Reevesland. George and his son Nelson, born right here in this very farmhouse in 1900, continued to work the land, a third-generation farmer carrying on the family tradition. They even embraced modernization, introducing milking machines in 1932. Reevesland persevered through the Depression and World War II, a symbol of resilience in a rapidly changing world. The Reeves family nurtured this land until 1955, when the era of milk cans faded, replaced by the rumble of tank trucks. The farm was subdivided and sold, leaving only these two acres and the farmhouse as a poignant reminder of what once was. Arlington County wisely purchased Reevesland in 2001, preserving this slice of history and incorporating it into Bluemont Park. Today, the farmhouse, a designated local historic district, stands watch over a popular sledding hill, a joyful echo of childhoods past. The farmhouse has seen many changes, from its simple beginnings as a gabled, T-plan structure to the additions made over the years. That small open porch at the rear, with the exterior stairway leading to an apartment above, holds countless untold stories. The east side porch, bracketed and welcoming, whispers of lazy afternoons and shared laughter. Even though much of the land is gone, here at Reevesland, the spirit of the farm lives on. It is a reminder that even in the midst of a bustling urban landscape, the echoes of a simpler time can still be heard.
