Red Rocks, or Pariwhero in Māori, is a special geological formation. It is located on Wellington’s south coast. This scientific reserve is nationally significant. It offers a peek into New Zealand’s early formation.
Māori have known Pariwhero for ages. They have many stories to explain the rocks’ red color. One story tells of Kupe’s daughter leaping from the cliffs. She stained the rocks with her blood in grief over his long absence. Another says Kupe bled on the rocks after a paua clamped his hand.
The name Pariwhero means red cliffs in Māori. It became the official dual name, Pariwhero / Red Rocks, after a settlement in 2009. This was between the Crown and local iwi, Taranaki Whānui ki te Upoko o te Ika.
In 1971, a small area was set aside to protect Red Rocks. It became the Red Rocks Scientific Reserve. The reserve shows a range of rock formations. These formations represent New Zealand’s earliest geological processes.
The “red rocks” are unique. Pariwhero offers some of the best evidence of their origin. The red rocks sequence is about 150 meters thick. It includes basaltic pillow lava, chert, and siltstone. These rocks are tilted nearly vertical to the shoreline.
The rocks’ colors come from iron compounds. Siltstones and chert accumulated slowly. This allowed more time for oxygenation. Highly oxidized sediment forms hematite, giving it a red color. Less oxidized siltstone appears green.
You can see three types of reddish rocks here at Red Rocks. Brick-red siltstone is the most common. Purple-red basalt lava shows pillow shapes. These shapes tell of underwater eruptions. Red and pinkish-white cherts are some of the oldest rocks in the North Island. They date back to the Late Permian age.
The story of Red Rocks began with colliding tectonic plates. Around 210 million years ago, the paleo-Pacific plate slid under Gondwana. This process is called subduction. An accretionary wedge formed. It included greywacke and deep-ocean sediments.
Basaltic volcanoes on the paleo-Pacific plate entered the subduction zone. They pushed sediments up and blocked turbidity currents. This allowed slower deposition of oceanic sediments. Material slid onto younger siltstone sediments. Gradual burial preserved these deposits.
After millions of years, the sediments were buried deep. High pressure and temperatures weakly metamorphosed them. The sediments folded and faulted. They were eventually uplifted and accreted to Gondwana.
Today, Pariwhero is the best example of “red rocks” enclosed by greywacke. As you stand here, imagine the immense forces that shaped this landscape. Note the colors, textures, and history etched into these ancient rocks. The landscape is rugged and the winds are strong. From May to October, you might even spot fur seals basking in the sun. Keep your distance.
