Before us stands the Rebec-Hof. It is more than just a building. It is a testament to Vienna’s history and its commitment to its people.

The Rebec-Hof emerged from a time of great change. After World War I, Vienna faced immense challenges. The social democrats stepped up. They initiated reforms and a massive building program. Their goal was to provide decent housing for the population. These homes offered a stark contrast to the overcrowded. They featured basic amenities like running water and toilets.

Completed in 1929, the Rebec-Hof is a prime example of this era. Architect Rudolf Goebel designed this building. He also designed it to blend in with the surrounding upper-middle-class architecture. Yet, it also exudes a quiet confidence.

Look closely at the facade of Rebec-Hof. Goebel originally planned a two-tone color scheme. This would have visually separated the floors. The building was ultimately painted in a single color. This makes the clinker details even more striking. Note the brickwork around the entrance. See the windows beneath the polygonal bay windows.

Originally, the Rebec-Hof had two commercial spaces. These spaces were merged during construction. In the 1930s, a library was housed here. Imagine residents gathering here. They shared stories and knowledge within these walls.

Step inside the courtyard of Rebec-Hof. The layout is symmetrical. It mirrors the street-facing facade. This design reflects the attention to detail. It shows the commitment to creating a harmonious living space.

The Rebec-Hof wasn’t always called the Rebec-Hof. In 1949, it was named in honor of Ernst Rebec. He was a Schutzbündler. He defended the Karl-Mark-Hof during the February Uprising in 1934. Rebec lost his life in the conflict. This building stands as a memorial to his courage and sacrifice. A plaque commemorates his bravery.

Rudolf Goebel had a prolific career before World War I. He designed numerous villas and apartment buildings. During the interwar period, he only completed two projects. One of them is the Rebec-Hof.

The Rebec-Hof represents a pivotal moment in Vienna’s history. It reflects the city’s dedication to social progress. It embodies architectural innovation. This building stands as a reminder of those who fought for a better future.
