“Thirsty?” a voice might have called out centuries ago in Madagascar. Look up at the Ravenala Madagascariensis. This isn’t a palm tree, despite its nickname “Traveller’s Palm”. It’s not a banana tree either, even though its leaves might fool you. The Ravenala Madagascariensis earns its common name from the rainwater it collects in its leaf bases. This “tree” was a vital source of hydration for thirsty travellers in its native Madagascar. This remarkable plant, with its unique fan-shaped arrangement of leaves, is also known as the Traveller’s Tree. It belongs to the Strelitziaceae family, related to the bird-of-paradise flower. Here in Hong Kong, the Ravenala Madagascariensis thrives in parks and gardens. It brings a touch of the tropics to our vibrant city. Its striking silhouette stands out, with oblong leaves that can reach two meters long. The leaves are arranged in two rows at the top of a stout, erect stem, creating that distinctive fan shape. Look closely at the stem. Notice the rough brown bark and the ring scars, each telling a story of growth and survival. The Ravenala Madagascariensis flowers year-round. It boasts boat-shaped spathes, each holding multiple whitish flowers with three sepals and three petals. Later, these flowers give way to brown, three-lobed capsules containing spectacular cobalt-blue seeds. The Ravenala Madagascariensis is a testament to nature’s ingenuity, offering beauty and sustenance in equal measure. It isn’t simply a tree. It’s a symbol of resilience, a beacon for the weary, and a living testament to the interconnectedness of life. The Ravenala Madagascariensis is a touch of Madagascar here in Hong Kong. It offers a whisper of the tropics amidst the bustle of the city.
