Seventy-five years ago, this very Rashbi Synagogue was built. It was dedicated to Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai, a revered figure from the time of the Roman occupation. The Rashbi, as he’s known, was a student of Rabbi Akiva and a prominent scholar. He even wrote the Zohar, a key text in Kabbalah. Legend says he and his son hid in a cave for thirteen years, surviving on carobs, dates, and miraculous sustenance. Here at the Rashbi Synagogue in Tel Aviv, a chilling event took place just a few years ago. During evening prayers, a suicide bomber detonated a device mere meters from the entrance. The windows shattered, and panic filled the air. It was a terrifying moment for the worshippers inside. Miraculously, everyone in the synagogue escaped serious injury. One passerby was hurt, but thankfully survived. Security footage later revealed the bomber’s path. He had approached the synagogue, then retreated slightly before the explosion. This led many to believe divine intervention had spared the congregation from a far worse tragedy. The Rashbi Synagogue is more than just a place of worship. It’s a place of study, particularly during summer break when yeshiva students gather here. The Chief Rabbi of Bnei Brak once visited these students. He proclaimed that their dedication to learning protected all of Tel Aviv. Just days later, the bombing occurred, reinforcing the belief in the power of Torah study. The synagogue, with its deep connection to Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai, stands as a testament to faith, resilience, and the enduring presence of miracles.
