In 1981, amidst the turbulent backdrop of Apartheid South Africa, Range High School emerged. It was established by the government specifically for “coloured” staff and learners. Range High School first opened its doors to approximately 300 pupils in standards 6 and 7, equivalent to today’s grades 8 and 9. The school, situated at 9 Lower Balvenie Avenue in Matroosfontein, Elsies River, has since become a cornerstone of the community. Range High School operates under the Western Cape Education Department as a public secondary school. It serves the vibrant community of The Range in Cape Town. In 2011, Range High School had a student population of 359, a significant growth since its inception. This called for a teaching staff of 13 educators, led by Principal Mr. J. Kayster. The curriculum at Range High School in 2011 included a diverse range of subjects. Students could delve into Afrikaans Home Language, English First Additional Language, Mathematical Literacy, Mathematics, Life Sciences, and Business Studies. They could also explore more technical fields like Computer Applications Technology. Additionally, they could round out their education with subjects such as Consumer Studies, Geography, History, Life Orientation, and Tourism. The school’s history is intertwined with a series of dedicated principals who have shaped its trajectory. Mr. Wicomb served as the inaugural principal. Subsequent leaders included Mr. Botha, Mr. Daniels, Mr. L. Liedeman, and Mr. L. de Wet, each contributing to the school’s ongoing development. As a Quintile 4 public school, Range High School relies on tuition fees to cover operational expenses and educational resources. While the school receives some government funding, up to R803 per learner, the fees set by the school’s administration play a crucial role in maintaining its educational programs.
