Established in 1922 as Scarborough High School R H King Academy boasts a rich history. Initially classes were held in the basement of Birch Cliff Congregational Church. Imagine 116 students and three teachers starting their academic journey in that humble setting. Dr Reginald Harold King the school’s first principal served for 32 years. He was a Classics specialist and a veteran of World War I. The school’s motto Per Ardua Sapientia Through the hard task of wisdom reflects his dedication.

The school evolved. It became Scarborough Collegiate Institute in 1930. It faced challenges. The Great Depression impacted the school’s finances teachers were even paid with food stamps. World War II brought a different kind of hardship. Students and staff contributed significantly to the war effort. They purchased War Saving Certificates and sent parcels overseas.

The name changed again in 1954 to R H King Collegiate Institute. This was a period of significant growth and expansion. New buildings were added. Double shifts were introduced due to overcrowding. Teachers taught from dawn till dusk. Can you imagine teaching all day with only lanterns for light after the power went off?

A major renovation occurred in 1976. Much of the original 1922 building was demolished. A modern structure replaced it. This included new academic classrooms a library a swimming pool and a cafetorium. The 1952 addition and archway however remain standing. They stand as a reminder of the school’s long and rich past.

In 1989 R H King Collegiate Institute became R H King Academy. This change helped the school avoid closure. It also gave it special status as an alternative school. The academy offered a unique program. The program included a modified school calendar and a mentorship program.
