Established in 1925 Queenwood School for Girls stands proudly in Mosman. It’s a testament to the vision of Grace Lawrance and Beatrice Rennie. These two remarkable women met at Glennie Memorial School in Queensland. They shared a dream of creating a top-tier school for girls in Sydney. After traveling to England and studying prestigious girls’ schools they returned. They chose a large old house in Mosman for Queenwood’s first location. The name itself is a tribute to Queenwood Ladies’ College in East Sussex. Miss Lawrance’s mother had founded that school. The Mosman site offered stunning views over Balmoral Beach. Queenwood quickly expanded needing a second site on Mandalong Road.

The early years weren’t without challenges. The Great Depression and World War II tested the school’s resilience. Despite hardship Queenwood thrived. Beatrice Rennie a key figure in its success even served as president of the New South Wales Headmistresses’ Association. In 1966 Queenwood became a non-profit private company. It continued to grow and evolve. The school expanded to four campuses all in Mosman. A significant redevelopment in 2002 and 2003 created a state-of-the-art Senior School campus. This included a large auditorium a library and cutting-edge technology. The Lawrance Campus followed suit with a pool and modern classrooms.

Queenwood’s motto Per Aspera ad Astra meaning Through Struggles to the Stars perfectly reflects its history. It speaks to the challenges overcome and the heights achieved. The school’s curriculum is rigorous. Students can choose between the Higher School Certificate and the International Baccalaureate Diploma. The house system fosters a sense of community. Queenwood also boasts a rich co-curricular program with opportunities in sports music drama and more.

Queenwood’s legacy extends far beyond its walls. Its impressive list of alumnae includes renowned writers actors and athletes. Some achieved amazing feats. They became leaders in their fields. They have contributed significantly to society. Visiting Queenwood today you feel the energy and ambition of a school with a proud past and a bright future.
