Queens Chapel United Methodist Church

“A spark, a flame, a devastating loss,” a church elder once whispered, recalling the story of Queens Chapel United Methodist Church. Right here, where we stand before this beautiful structure, a log cabin chapel once stood, built in 1870 by freedmen with a vision for their community. Queens Chapel United Methodist Church, named after a former landowner, Thomas Queen, quickly became the heart of Muirkirk. The church flourished, becoming a beacon of hope and resilience. However, in 1899, tragedy struck. Lightning ignited the log cabin, reducing it to ashes. Undeterred, the congregation rallied, securing a loan from Charles Coffin, the owner of the Muirkirk Furnace, and by 1901, a new church, built of Georgia pine, rose from the ashes. This new structure served the growing community for decades. By 1909, the loan to Charles Coffin was repaid in full. The church expanded its land holdings with the purchase of an additional acre for the cemetery. Growth continued, leading to another building project in the 1930s. Queens Chapel United Methodist Church even secured two acres of land through an act of Congress in 1947. This era was a testament to the church’s deepening roots in the community. The church continued to evolve, with administrative changes leading to its official incorporation in 1969. Membership soared, and the church’s calendar blossomed with annual traditions. The vibrant Mass Choir formed in 1984. And in 1985, the Male Chorus released its first album, “Going on Just the Same,” echoing the church’s unwavering spirit. By 1987, recognizing the need for further expansion, Queens Chapel purchased 5.5 acres of land from PEPCO, envisioning a new edifice or a major renovation. The dream finally took shape in 2009 when, under the leadership of a new pastor, the church broke ground on a new sanctuary and educational complex. After two years of construction, the congregation returned to their beloved church on Old Muirkirk Road, now known as “The New Frontier.” The journey of Queens Chapel United Methodist Church reflects the perseverance of its community. Through trials and triumphs, the church has remained a steadfast symbol of faith and progress, a testament to the enduring power of hope.
