Pyrmont Bridge connects the vibrant city center to the historic suburb of Pyrmont. It offers stunning views of Darling Harbour and the city skyline. Originally designed for horse-drawn carriages and early automobiles, the Pyrmont Bridge opened in 1902. Its construction took 33 months and cost a hefty £112,569. The bridge’s innovative swing span, one of the largest in the world at that time, allowed tall ships to pass through. Imagine the spectacle of this massive steel structure, weighing 1,000 tonnes, gracefully pivoting open. It was powered by electricity from the nearby Ultimo Powerhouse, now the fascinating Powerhouse Museum. Pyrmont Bridge’s design was the brainchild of Percy Allan, a prolific engineer who designed over 500 bridges in New South Wales. He incorporated Australian ironbark timber into 12 of the bridge’s 14 spans. The two central swing spans were constructed of steel, a testament to the emerging industrial age. This blend of natural and industrial materials gives the Pyrmont Bridge its unique character. The bridge served as a vital artery for motor vehicles until 1981. With the construction of the Western Distributor freeway, vehicle traffic was diverted. For a brief period, the Pyrmont Bridge faced demolition. Public outcry saved it from this fate. In 1988, after extensive restoration, it reopened as a pedestrian and bicycle bridge. Today, as you stroll across Pyrmont Bridge, take a moment to appreciate its remarkable history.
