Shining in the city, the Pylon Sculpture stands tall. It is more than just art. It’s a story etched in steel and light.

Let’s delve into the tale of this eye-catching structure. The Pylon Sculpture, originally a 60-ft pylon sign, marked the Galleria mall. The Galleria mall was slated for redevelopment into Galleria on the Park.

Artist Thrush Holmes breathed new life into this dated brick pylon. Holmes transformed it into a colourful gateway. The Pylon Sculpture became a mixed-media masterpiece. It features an illuminated Galleria sign. A vibrant neon bar adds to its allure. Holmes’ signature neon artwork shines bright. The “Love me Till I’m Me Again” sign catches the eye. A massive red heart glows atop the Pylon Sculpture. Splashes of bright green, red, blue, and yellow paint complete the artwork.

Holmes said this piece pays homage to the Dupont West neighbourhood. He passed by this pylon sign countless times. He had the opportunity to contribute to his community’s transformation through art. This was truly special for him.

Gerald Gladstone also created a Pylon Sculpture in 1960. It is made of concrete and bronze. It is located in East York at 170 Memorial Park Ave. It was commissioned by the City of Toronto Public Art Commission.

Toronto has over 400 locations of art in the city. Toronto’s public art programs have transformed the city. They have assembled a collection of international significance.

In 2019, Toronto City Council renewed its commitment to public art. They adopted a new ten-year Public Art Strategy. The Strategy represents all populations of the city. It highlights Indigenous history and multicultural presence.

ArtworxTO is Toronto’s Year of Public Art. It promotes the existing collection. It addresses gaps in representation. It helps even the geographic spread of public art. ArtworxTO has provided over CAD $4.5 million in funding to 1,400 artists. They have produced over 350 new murals, installations, and exhibitions.

The city wants public art accessible to all. It wants artworks to reinforce neighbourhood character. It wants to advance the careers of local artists.

The Pylon Sculpture is more than a sign. It is a beacon of art. It represents Toronto’s commitment to creativity. It shows community everywhere. It connects the past with the present. Its transformation embodies the city’s spirit. It reinvents the ordinary into something extraordinary.

As you stand here, take a moment. Feel the energy of this vibrant creation. Let the colours and lights inspire you. Remember, art has the power to transform. It can renew our surroundings. The Pylon Sculpture is a testament to this belief. It invites you to love Toronto until you are you again.
