Envision yourself transported back in time, to the era of the Badung Kingdom. You stand on the banks of the Ayung River, near the sacred Pura Agung Petilan in Denpasar. This isn’t just any temple. Pura Agung Petilan, also known as Pura Pangrebongan, pulsates with the heart of Kesiman village. Its history is intertwined with the rise and fall of kingdoms, whispered in the rustling leaves and the flowing river. Pura Agung Petilan is more than just a place of worship. It’s a cultural anchor, deeply connected to the community. The Eka Ilikita Desa Adat Kesiman, a historical document, reveals its importance as the central temple for major religious ceremonies. The village gathers here, their lives interwoven with the rituals and traditions of Pura Agung Petilan. The very name “petilan” speaks of ancient practices. Some say it comes from “pailen-ilen,” referring to ceremonies held at the penyawangan, a rice barn-like structure used when the Ayung River was impassable. Others believe it derives from “tila,” meaning to plant seeds, linking the temple to the king’s role in cultivating ideas. Pura Agung Petilan is a territorial temple, the spiritual hub for the Kesiman Traditional Village, linked to the sacred Kahyangan Tiga. Unlike other temples, Pura Agung Petilan doesn’t have a typical piodalan ceremony. Instead, it serves as a gathering point, a pasamuan, where sacred statues, offerings, and even the revered barong and rangda from all village temples converge. Every six months, the pangilen ritual takes place at Pura Agung Petilan. Three distinct ceremonies unfold: the Pangebekan, the Pamapagan/Pamendak Agung, and the Ngarebong, also known as Pangrebongan. The Ngarebong is especially significant, occurring eight days after the Kuningan holiday. Imagine the vibrant energy as the community gathers, their devotion echoing through the temple grounds. Pura Agung Petilan stands as a testament to the enduring power of tradition. It’s a place where the past whispers to the present, where the spirit of Kesiman village comes alive.
