Did you know Punakha District was once Bhutan’s capital? Imagine standing here before the majestic Punakha Dzong. This isn’t just any building. It’s the heart of Punakha District a place steeped in history and spirituality. Punakha Dzong the Palace of Great Happiness was built in the 17th century. Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal the founder of Bhutan ordered its construction. It stands proudly between the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers. These rivers are considered male and female respectively.

For centuries Punakha Dzong served as Bhutan’s administrative and religious center. It housed the winter home of Bhutan’s Central Monk Body. More importantly it held the earthly remains of Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal himself. A continuous vigil guarded his body within the dzong’s walls. This shows the deep reverence for their founder.

But Punakha Dzong’s history is not without challenges. Fires ravaged the dzong in 1780 1789 1802 1831 1849 and 1986. An earthquake struck in 1897. Floods in 1957 1960 and 1994 also tested its resilience. Despite these setbacks Punakha Dzong remains a symbol of strength and endurance.
