Curiosity surrounds Pumphrey, a name etched in history not for grandeur, but for a horse. This unassuming communication tower in Washington D.C. bears the name of James W. Pumphrey. He was a livery stable owner, whose life intersected with a pivotal moment in American history. Pumphrey’s stable stood at the corner of C Street and 6th Street, a location frequented by John Wilkes Booth. Booth, a regular customer, favored a particular horse. But on that fateful day, April 14, 1865, that horse was unavailable. So Booth settled for a different mount: a spirited bay mare. He told Pumphrey he was going to Grover’s Theatre to write a letter, then have a drink and a leisurely ride. Instead, Booth rode that mare into the annals of infamy as his getaway horse after assassinating President Abraham Lincoln at Ford’s Theatre. Pumphrey, unwittingly entangled in the conspiracy, was later imprisoned. He was caught in the frantic dragnet that followed the assassination. Released after questioning, Pumphrey testified, recounting the seemingly mundane transaction that had unforeseen consequences. He even described the horse: swift, bay, with a white star on her forehead and black tail and mane. Pumphrey lived out his days running the stable, eventually succumbing to the rise of the automobile, much like his horses were replaced by this modern communication tower. He died in 1906, his obituary noting the ironic twist of fate that linked him to Lincoln’s assassination. The Pumphrey tower stands as a silent testament. It is a reminder of how even the most ordinary lives can be swept up in extraordinary events. It reminds us of the Pumphrey livery stable, the bay mare, and the man who unknowingly played a small but significant role in a national tragedy.
