Pui O Campsite nestles next to Pui O Beach on Lantau Island. It offers a refreshing escape from city life. Imagine pitching your tent here. This camp site is equipped with camp bays and barbecue pits. An office is also on site for assistance.

Getting here is easy. You can take bus No 1 or No 4 from Mui Wo Ferry Pier. Get off at Pui O Public School for a short 15-minute ride. Alternatively bus No 3M or A35 from Tung Chung Town Centre will also get you here. This is approximately a 30-minute ride.

Pui O Campsite has 54 camp bays. These bays are available on a first-come-first-served basis. However advance booking arrangements are in place for Hong Kong residents during the Lunar New Year holidays Labour Day and National Day.

To secure a spot you must be 18 or older. You must also have a Hong Kong Identity Card or valid travel documents. Successful applicants get one camp place for up to six consecutive nights. Campers can check in from 11:00 am and must check out by 10:00 am on the day of departure.

Hong Kong residents can apply in advance within specified dates. The application form can be submitted in person by post or by email. Send it to the Islands District Leisure Services Office.

Remember each applicant can book only one camp bay for a maximum of four consecutive nights. Repeated applications are not allowed. If camp bays are available residents and tourists can apply on-site at the camp office.

Cleansing and maintenance occur every Tuesday from 11:00 am to Wednesday 11:00 am. Campers must check out by 10:00 am on Tuesdays. They should take all belongings. The Leisure and Cultural Services Department manages Pui O Campsite.

The Islands District Leisure Services Office is at Room 622 6/F Harbour Building 38 Pier Road Central Hong Kong. You can call them at 2852 3220. The Pui O Campsite’s address is Pui O Beach Lantau Island. Their phone number is 2984 1116.

Pui O Beach offers soft sands though not always golden. Some say they are smoother than most beaches in Hong Kong. The waves can be strong ideal for surfing and kitesurfing. Clam digging is a popular activity here. You might see adults digging with their feet. Children build sand castles nearby.

You can enjoy the kiosks restaurants and bars at the beachfront. Local shops sell refreshments and beach equipment along the path from the bus stops to the beach. The beach provides toilets showers and lifeguard stands.

Pui O is more than just a campsite. It is steeped in history. The village of Lo Pui O resettled after the Great Clearance in 1669. Villages here once built walls to defend against pirates.

Pui O also boasts historical buildings. Visit the Tin Hau Temple in Ham Tin. It was built in the Ming dynasty. See the Lin Kong Tong and Cheung Ancestral Hall too. Even an archaeological site was discovered here in 1957.

Nature lovers will appreciate the mangroves. They are on both sides of the estuary. Water buffaloes roam in Pui O one of their last habitats in Hong Kong.

The Lantau Trail passes through Pui O. Mountain bike tracks are also available on the Chi Ma Wan peninsula.
