Deep within the forests near Vrapice, a hidden treasure lay dormant. This is the story of the prvnu00ed dokumentovanu00fd nu00e1lez uhlu00ed na Kladensku, the first documented discovery of coal in the Kladno region. Our tale begins in 1775. Two woodcutters, Vu00e1clav Burger and Jakub Opelt, stumbled upon a peculiar mound of dark, shiny stones. Legend has it that a mole, burrowing through the earth, brought these unusual stones to the surface. Intrigued, the woodcutters took their discovery to a blacksmith in Brandu00fdsek named Vu00e1clav Linhart. Linhart, curious about the stones, tossed them into his forge. To his astonishment, they ignited, revealing their true nature: coal. This seemingly insignificant event marked a turning point for Kladno. The discovery wasn’t entirely accidental. The woodcutters had unknowingly uncovered the outcrop of a coal seam. Though coal had been used in smaller quantities before, this discovery marked the beginning of significant mining in the area. The prvnu00ed dokumentovanu00fd nu00e1lez uhlu00ed na Kladensku set in motion a chain of events that would transform Kladno. The newly found coal was initially used in Prague and for firing bricks for the Terezu00edn fortress. The true boom for Kladno itself arrived in 1846 when Jan Vu00e1u010da discovered a massive coal seam directly within the town. Kladno’s industrial revolution was ignited. The town experienced rapid growth, earning the nickname “Czech Manchester”. Its population increased tenfold within 30 years. The influx of wealth led to cultural development, with the construction of a theater, a new and larger church, and schools. Modern amenities like sewage systems and electric lighting were installed by the end of the 19th century. All thanks to that initial discovery, the prvnu00ed dokumentovanu00fd nu00e1lez uhlu00ed na Kladensku, near Vrapice. Mining became a tradition, passed down through generations. Many miners recall their time in the mines fondly, remembering the camaraderie and teamwork. The era of coal in Kladno eventually came to a close in 2002, after an explosion in the last functioning mine, Schoeller. This marked another significant shift for the city, bringing both challenges and new opportunities. The prvnu00ed dokumentovanu00fd nu00e1lez uhlu00ed na Kladensku.
