Can you imagine what it was like to stand here in the middle of the woods 150 years ago? Imagine all the soldiers scattered through the trees. They were part of the Prussian army. Right here, in the middle of the forest, a young officer was buried after a long and arduous battle. The Pruský křiž, the Prussian cross, was built to commemorate his sacrifice. The cross was built in 1868, but the original grave was long gone by then, overgrown by wild plants. The Prussian soldiers were fighting in the Prusso-Austrian War, which was very important for the unification of Germany. This cross is one of many that were erected all over Prussia to honour their fallen soldiers. But this one stands here in the middle of the Czech countryside, reminding us that war affects many people, not just the ones fighting. This is a testament to the far-reaching impacts of conflicts, even if not all are obvious at first glance. The soldiers fought here for power and influence, for land and for a united country, but we can see that not even death can forget the human cost of war.
