The organization, later renamed ProgressiveChristianity.org, was established by Jim Adams, rector of St. Mark’s Church on Capitol Hill. At its inception, no known organization or scholar openly used the term “progressive Christianity”. Progressive Christianity represents a postmodern theological approach, evolving from liberal Christianity. It questions tradition, embraces diversity, and champions social justice. Environmental stewardship and a deep belief in the love of Christ are central. The movement emphasizes the teachings of Jesus, not just his person. It focuses on God’s presence in the world and promotes salvation here and now. Progressive Christianity values orthopraxy—right actions—over orthodoxy—right beliefs. It welcomes reason, paradox, and mystery, accepting homosexuality and acknowledging diverse paths to God.
