Progress Village Seventh-day Adventist Church started modestly in 1983. Members met in homes and the Progress Village Community Center. This wasn’t just a religious gathering. It was a beacon of hope in the community. Their devotion eventually led to the construction of their current building in 1985.
Pastor Larry Johnson served the church for two years. He had a unique background. He held degrees in both business management and theology. This blend of skills made him a well-rounded leader. His wife Carol worked at Prudential Care. Their son Jonathan was ten years old. The church wasn’t just a place of worship but a place where families thrived.
The church blossomed. Its membership grew to 150 people. They offered numerous programs. Bible studies family life initiatives and youth activities like Pathfinders were all part of their offerings. Church dinners women’s ministries and even teas were all regular events.
The Progress Village Seventh-day Adventist Church wasn’t confined to its walls. Its members actively served their community. Every fourth Sunday they fed the hungry in Tampa. They partnered with Mount Calvary Seventh-day Adventist Church on this mission of compassion. A tutoring program ran twice a week at the community center. Church members tutored students in various subjects. They also ran a clothes closet food pantry and provided housing assistance.
The church’s theme for a year was “Where is the Holy Spirit?” The congregation explored the presence of the Holy Spirit in both the Old and New Testaments. This focus on spiritual understanding permeated all aspects of the church’s life.
Today the church continues to thrive under Pastor Brian McKinney. It’s a place of worship prayer and community service. It’s a living example of faith in action. It’s a vibrant hub.
