A simple plaque, nestled amongst the grandeur of Vienna. It might be easy to overlook the Prof. Anton Hlavaček Plaque. But what stories lie behind this unassuming tribute? This plaque commemorates the life and work of Anton Hlavaček, a prominent Austrian landscape painter. Born in Vienna in 1842, Hlavaček’s artistic talents blossomed amidst the city’s vibrant art scene.

The Prof. Anton Hlavaček Plaque stands as a testament to his dedication to capturing the beauty of Austria’s landscapes. He wasn’t an instant success though. He was actually rejected twice by the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts. They deemed him lacking in talent. He persisted. In 1859 he finally gained admission to the esteemed institution’s landscape painting class. Here he honed his skills under the guidance of renowned artists like Wilhelm Steinfelds. He also forged lifelong friendships with fellow artists Eugen Jettel and Robert Russ.

Hlavaček’s works were not confined to the walls of a gallery. He undertook ambitious projects that showcased the grandeur of Vienna. One such project was the creation of a colossal panorama of Vienna and its surroundings. This impressive work, painted from the vantage point of the Nußberg hill, once graced the Stone Hall of Vienna’s City Hall. It offers a breathtaking testament to Hlavaček’s talent and his love for his city. While the panorama is no longer in the City Hall, you can still find some of his landscapes displayed in the Vienna City Hall cellar. The Prof. Anton Hlavaček Plaque serves as a reminder of his legacy. He left a lasting mark on Vienna’s art world.
