Whispering willows line the Radotín Valley Nature Reserve. Their branches sway gently in the breeze. This is more than just a pretty place. It’s a living testament to Prague’s rich history.

The Radotín Valley Nature Reserve a haven of biodiversity sits on the southwestern edge of Prague. It’s a captivating blend of forests and rocky outcrops. The confluence of the Radotín and Mlýnský streams shapes this unique landscape. The reserve’s boundaries encompass Zadní Kopanina to the north Cikánka to the east Kosory to the south and extend almost to Chotěč in the west.

For centuries this valley has been a place of human activity. Shepherds grazed their flocks of sheep and goats on the steep rocky slopes. The Radotín Valley is far older than those shepherds though. Its geological formations are millions of years old. Joachim Barrande himself a pioneering geologist studied this very area. He uncovered a wealth of Devonian-era fossils. The valley’s geological profile is internationally significant a treasure trove of ancient life. The area contains several classic finds of fossils including part of the stratotype of the Kopanina formation dating back to the Silurian period.

More than just rocks and fossils the Radotín Valley boasts a remarkable diversity of plant and animal life. Over 600 species of flowering plants thrive here. The rare Austrian dragonhead Dracocephalum austriacum finds one of its nine Czech habitats here. The reserve also shelters many relict insect species remnants of past ecosystems. The area supports diverse woodland communities including oak and hornbeam forests. Open rocky outcrops feature species-rich xerothermic grasslands.

The history of the Radotín Valley isn’t limited to nature. Twenty-two watermills once lined the Radotín stream. These mills used the power of water to grind grain for the local farmers. The Taslar and Mašek mills are two of the best-preserved examples. They remain privately owned and sadly inaccessible to the public.

Near the Cikánka settlement stands a mysterious building. Some call it a hunting lodge. Legend claims a Russian nobleman built it in the 18th century. This imposing structure however was originally a farm built in 1906. The Radotín Valley continues to hold many secrets whispered on the wind. It’s a place where history geology and nature intertwine. A place where time itself seems to slow.

Today the Radotín Valley Nature Reserve faces new challenges. Its proximity to the city brings increased visitation. This unfortunately leads to pollution litter and erosion. The ongoing goal is to preserve and enhance the natural beauty and biodiversity of this precious area. Let’s continue to protect this fascinating landscape for generations to come. A landscape that tells a story millions of years in the making. A story written in stone and whispered by the wind among the ancient rocks of the Radotín Valley Nature Reserve.
