Orchids bloom here. Specifically, the protected Louka u Vojkova boasts a vibrant population of them.
Welcome to Louka u Vojkova. This natural monument protects endangered plant species. It’s a beautiful meadow with a rich history.
Declared in May 2023 this precious area spans 0.87 hectares. It is located northeast of Tehov in the Prague-East district. The Louka u Vojkova lies in the Central Bohemia region.
Imagine stepping onto this meadow. You are surrounded by greenery and the gentle sounds of nature. The Rokytka stream flows nearby adding to the tranquility. The meadow lies between the I/2 road and the Rokytka stream.
Louka u Vojkova is home to several endangered plant species. These include the broad-leaved marsh orchid. You can also find Siberian iris and saw-wort.
The meadow’s geological foundation consists of coarse-grained biotite granite. These granites are from the Central Bohemian Pluton. Quaternary sediments overlay them. The landscape gently undulates. Small streams crisscross the area. Agricultural forests surround Louka u Vojkova.
Since 2003 volunteers from ZO ČSOP Ekocentrum Říčany have cared for the site. Their efforts help maintain the meadow’s biodiversity.
The Louka u Vojkova has a slightly warm climate. Average January temperatures range from -3 to -4 degrees Celsius. July sees averages of 17 to 18 degrees Celsius. Annual rainfall totals 650 to 750 millimeters. Snow cover lasts sixty to eighty days per year.
The meadow’s ecosystem includes damp meadow vegetation. Specifically, purple moor grass meadows cover 34% of the area. Alternately moist meadows make up 23%.
Other rare plants thrive here. These include tufted sedge and distant sedge. You might also spot two-row sedge. Autumn crocus and the highest globeflower add to the floral diversity.
Local wildlife is typical of the surrounding area. Brown frogs live here. Creating a pool could support more amphibians. Insect monitoring has not been conducted. Valuable insects may live in the meadow.
The meadow is managed using traditional methods. Grass is cut and used for animal feed. In wet conditions, mowing may be partial or skipped. This is because the wet ground makes grass removal difficult.
Louka u Vojkova faces some challenges. Expanding residential development threatens the surrounding landscape. Careful management is crucial. This will preserve this natural gem for future generations.
The Rokytka stream meanders along the southern edge. Its natural dynamics contribute to the area’s ecological value. The stream and adjacent floodplain are part of the protected area. Preserving them is vital.
So as you leave Louka u Vojkova consider the importance of protecting these natural habitats. Small areas can harbor incredible biodiversity. They deserve our care and attention. Next time you see a meadow remember the orchids. Remember the work to keep this haven thriving.
