“A forgotten vineyard” whispers the wind. That’s the story of Havránka. This natural monument in Prague’s Troja district isn’t just a pretty view. It holds secrets from centuries past.
Havránka a protected area since 1982 boasts a rich history. It encompasses two distinct areas Pustá vinice and the Haltýř stream valley. Pustá vinice once housed one of Troja’s oldest vineyards. Imagine the sun-drenched slopes laden with grapes. The air filled with the sweet scent of fermenting wine.
The area’s designation as a natural monument wasn’t arbitrary. It’s home to unique vegetation including heat-loving grasslands. Several springs also feed the Haltýř stream. These springs historically supplied drinking water to the nearby Troja Chateau. The water flowed through a wooden aqueduct. That’s a smart-aleck fact for you.
The Haltýř itself was more than just a stream. Its name originates from an old wooden structure. This structure stood above the spring or where the spring flowed into a small pond. The wood absorbed water. This cooled the interior creating a natural refrigerator. People used it to store food.
Unfortunately Havránka’s story isn’t without challenges. In 2006 a poorly executed land reclamation project damaged the delicate ecosystem. The use of topsoil led to an overgrowth of weeds. This threatened the native flora. The Botanical Garden of Prague manages Havránka. They’ve tried to counteract the damage. They now graze goats and sheep on the land. This is meant to manage the vegetation. Its effectiveness is however debatable.
