Is it just me, or can you sense that too? A certain energy. Right here, beside us, stands Prins Eugens Ek, the largest living oak tree in all of Stockholm. This majestic giant has stood watch over Djurgården for centuries, witnessing the ebb and flow of history. Imagine, if you will, Stockholm in the 16th century. Ekar, as these mighty oaks are known in Swedish, were highly prized. They were considered the king’s property, and using them for anything other than shipbuilding was a crime punishable by death! It took thousands of oaks to build just one warship, you see. Thankfully for this magnificent oak and many others like it on Djurgården, they were spared the woodcutter’s axe. Prins Eugens Ek, named after Prince Eugen, a renowned Swedish artist and a son of King Oscar II, has weathered its fair share of storms, both literal and figurative. In the 1950s, a lightning strike ripped through its core, splitting one of its three mighty trunks. To save this grand old tree, they filled the cavity with concrete. Imagine that, concrete inside a tree! Later, another lightning bolt struck, splitting another trunk. They reinforced it with metal braces and chains to hold it together. Today, Prins Eugens Ek stands tall, a testament to resilience and the enduring power of nature. This isn’t just a tree. It’s a survivor, a silent guardian of Stockholm’s past.
