“A ‘Publicist Club Raffle Villa’? Now that’s a mouthful!” someone whispers as we stand before Pressens Hus. You might be surprised to know that this stately brick building has a connection to a raffle. The Pressens Hus we see today, built in 1903, was actually the site of a grand prize. It all started with the Pressens Lottery, organized by the Publicist Club in the early 1900s. The top prize? A stunning new villa designed by none other than the rising star architect Carl Westman. The original “Pressens Villa,” as it was called, was a beautiful blend of Arts and Crafts, Art Nouveau, and Swedish National Romanticism. Imagine a home with open spaces flowing into each other, walls painted in vibrant hues, and custom-designed furniture, even in the nursery! Sadly, this architectural gem was demolished in 1957. However, the spirit of innovation and connection to the world of media live on in the current Pressens Hus, a testament to the enduring legacy of this unique piece of Stockholm’s history.
